Title: Clementine Facts
clementine

History of the Clementine

It has been said that the Clementine was discovered by father Clement Rodier in 1902, a monk in Algeria while tending his mandarin garden. Father Rodier created a hybrid between a mandarin orange and a sweet orange.

The Clementine is an excellent eating orange due to the easily removable skin, sweetness and very few seeds. Clementines effortlessly separate into eight to twelve juicy segments.

Clementines are imported from Spain and Northern Africa where they have found a climate and soil that is conducive to their development. It is often said that the combination of the taste and aroma of the Clementine is the most refreshing of all citrus. Clementines first entered the North American market in the late 1990s when North America experienced harsh winters that devastated the domestic orange crops. First viewed as a holiday gift purchase Clementines have expanded their appeal and growing season.
