Title: PineApple Facts

History of the Pineapple:

Thought to have first been domesticated by the Indians of South America living in the basins of the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers. The pineapple ultimately spread across South America and the Caribbean.

The pineapple was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on the island of Guadeloupe.

The English called the sweet flavored fruit a pineapple due to its resemblance to a pinecone. The fruit was originally called “anana” meaning excellent fruit.

Due to the rarity of the fruit and the fact that it was such an exotic honor to be served a pineapple it became a symbol of prestige and social class. Today pineapples are the world’s symbol of hospitality.

Selecting the Perfect Pineapple:

When choosing a pineapple the process can often be very extensive.Unlike many fruits the color of the exterior does not tell you the ripeness of the fruit. There are several varieties of pineapples on the market from green to golden yellow. The size of the pineapple does not influence the quality of the fruit.

One should make sure there are no soft spots, bruises or darkened areas this would indicate that one may want to select a different pineapple.A strong signal of freshness is the sweet smell that a fresh pineapple releases. To maintain freshness once you bring the pineapple home keep it refrigerated.Pineapples can be left at room temperature for one or two days before serving. This will not make the pineapple any sweeter but it will help the fruit become softer and juicer.

Health Benefits of the Pineapple:

Pineapples are not only a way to satisfy your taste-buds but a method to promote health and healing
